Wanda Sykes reveals that she is still reeling from the trauma of the 2022 Academy Awards and Will Smith’s actions against fellow comedian Chris Rock.

Comedian Wanda Sykes recently responded to the famous Oscars party starring Will Smith and Chris Rock, revealing so far, more than a month later, that she’s still shocked by the event.

Speaking at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Sykes said, “I’m still shocked…I can’t talk about it. I feel emotional.” She then continued, “I couldn’t believe he was still sitting there, like an ass… Shouldn’t you be sitting there with a lawyer or the LAPD, mommy—–?” “I hope he gets his picture together. Until then, he is,” concluded the comedian.

Smith became the subject of backlash after the Oscars. The cause of the accident appears to have been a rock joke targeting Jada Pinkett Smith, who shaved her head as a way to deal with vixen. The comedian stated, “GI Jane 2, I can’t wait to see it.” The joke prompted Will Smith to slap Rock and yell, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.” Both the actor and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences came under heavy criticism, with many arguing that the Academy should have acted to remove Smith.

Instead, Smith stayed at the party and even accepted an award for his performance in King Richard an hour later. “I want to apologize to the Academy; I want to apologize to all my fellow candidates. I hope the Academy will invite me again,” Smith said in tears in his speech.

The academy issued a statement after the ceremony. A spokesperson for the Academy said, “The Academy condemns Mr. Smith’s actions on last night’s show…We have officially begun a formal review of the incident and will explore further actions and consequences in accordance with our internal regulations, standards of conduct, and California law.” Shortly after, the Academy’s Board of Regents held a private meeting, During which it was decided to prevent Smith from attending the Oscars or any of its other events for the next ten years.

It should be noted that prior to that, Smith had issued a public apology to Rock on social media. He wrote: “Jokes in [his] Expenses are part of the job, but it’s a joke about it [Jada Pinkett Smith’s] The medical condition was too much to handle and I wanted emotionally… I was out of line and I was wrong. I feel embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I wanted to be.”
