- GKIDS, the popular producer and distributor of adult and family animation, today announced it has acquired the North American distribution rights for Goodbye, Don Giles!. Produced by popular studio Madhouse, the film is the first original film by writer/director Atsuko Ishizuka, who previously directed the critically acclaimed series A Place Beyond the Universe. Goodbye Don Giles! It follows the story of three friends over the course of one summer, as their backyard adventures turn one small incident into a life-changing journey.
- It was released domestically in February 2022, and stars popular Japanese voice actors Ayumu Murase (Shoyo Hinata, “Haikyo!!”), Natsuki Hanai (Tanjiro Kamado, “Devil Slayer”), Kana Hanazawa (Akani Tsunemori, “Saeko Bass”), and Yuki Kage (Eren Jaeger, “Attack on Titan”). The film is an international representation by KADOKAWA. GKIDS will release bye-bye, without sitters! Dramatically in both original Japanese and a brand new dubbing for English this year.
- “We have all been incredibly moved by Atsuko Ishizuka’s mindful, airy style of a classic story about teen friendship,” said David Gestedt, President of GKIDS. “We can’t wait for audiences to share this beautiful blend of comedy and drama, set on summer days when anything seems possible.”

Teens unfamiliar with Roma, Toto, and Drupe call themselves “Don Gillies,” an informal name for their backyard adventures. One day, when the trio is blamed for a nearby forest fire, they set off into the woods to prove their innocence. When disaster strikes their expedition, tensions erupt between the friends as they realize their upbringing has taken them on completely different paths in life. Director Atsuko Ishizuka continues her critically acclaimed series A Place Beyond the Universe with her first original feature film. With luminous animations and lush backgrounds, Farewell, Don Glees! It is a tender story of coming of age about the fear of being young and a bittersweet journey of self-discovery.
