Marion brings movies to city parks all summer long

The Marion Parks and Recreation Department introduces a new travel movie program called “Movies on the Move.”

Marion – The city of Marion turns its city parks into outdoor cinemas all summer long.

The Marion Parks and Recreation Department is introducing a new, free travel movie program called “Movies on the Move.”

Between May and September, on the third Tuesday of the month, beginning May 17, the department will have an outdoor film for the selection of Marion Gardens.

Movies are scheduled to begin around 8pm and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets as well as food and drink.

“The goal was to figure out a way to break down some of those geographic and potential travel barriers that may be preventing people from attending events at some of the most iconic locations around the city like Lowe Park and City Square Park,” said the entertainment supervisor. Tony Ireland. “It’s an attempt to be more fair with our services by providing them entertainment.”

Ireland said he was really satisfied with the idea and what it could add to the city’s already strong summer programs.

“Because this is our first year, we wanted to make sure we tried to have a variety of films that might interest different demographics,” Ireland said. “We wanted to try something a little different and have some entertainment early in the week as there’s always a lot of shows from Thursday to Sunday.”

Ireland said he was also curious about what turnout the city would see in shows.

“I would say our biggest question mark right now is how people are going to respond to this in the beginning,” Ireland said. “I’m excited for people to step back and put their worries aside for a few hours and enjoy our beautiful gardens…maybe they meet some new people from their area and make some new friends.”

Summer Party Series Returns for 2022

Also, Marion’s long-running party series, Marion by Moonlight and Uptown Getdown, returns for another year.

The June Marion by Moonlight concert series will return to Lowe Park for the 2022 season. Both concert series moved to Lowe last year from City Square Park due to distance-keeping needs from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the twenty-sixth year of the Marion by Moonlight series. Concerts start at 6pm

Uptown Getdown will return in August to City Square Park as the Uptown construction between the Seventh Avenue streetcape development and Broad and Main project finishes later this summer.

In 2020, Uptown Gate Down hit the road, performing concerts in various neighborhoods around Marion. But now, the concerts will take place in City Square Park. Concerts start at 5:30 p.m.

  • August 18: Schmidt Brothers
  • August 25: Icebreakers

Uptown Marion Market

The Marion Uptown Market returns to City Square Park as well.

Last year, the market was held in a city-owned car park on Eighth Avenue and 12th Street due to all the construction in Uptown.

Now, the new Festival Street on Seventh Avenue will be used, allowing the market to take place in the park as well as along the street. The idea is also to get people to nearby local businesses, said Jill Ackerman, former president of the Marion Chamber.

This year, visitors can expect more than 30 vendors during four dates this summer. Vendors will offer fresh produce, baked goods, authentic Iowa wines, specialty foods, and a wide variety of artisanal items.

(All dates from 8 am to noon)
