The K-Pop music industry consists not only of hot K-pop groups but also of soloists. Korean soloists are in a league of their own and they are very successful. The one we are going to talk about today is singer Soran, a K-pop solo artist. Many of you may know it from the beautiful OSTs of your favorite series. Her voice is dripping with honey and it is comforting to listen to. Here, I will share with you some of her most famous work and personal life.
One of the most interesting and motivating facts about her is that their K-pop journey in Suran did not start at such a young age as other artists. Unlike them, Soran didn’t start singing until she was in her early twenties. She was, in fact, a computer science student in college. Although she started much later than most of her K-pop contemporaries, Suran has made a name for herself.
The beginnings of Suran and K-pop Career
She was born on the 15th of July 1986 in Busan, South Korea. She led a regular student life until she made her debut in the music industry in 2014. Not much is known, but her initial assignments include being part of a duo. In 2014, she made her debut in Lodi and released the song “I Got The Feeling”. Ludia was a duo made by ATC Entertainment.
For Ludia, Susan used her stage name, Elena. The other member was Evie. After Ludia, Soran debuted as a solo artist in December 2014 with the song “I feel”. She is signed to the music record label Million Market. Million Market is a sub-brand of SM Entertainment.
In 2017, she also appeared in the popular music show “King of Mask Singer”. A major breakthrough came for her when she collaborated with BTS’s Suga feat. Rapper Changmo for the track “Wine”. For the song, it won two awards at the 9th Mellon Music Awards and one at the 32nd Golden Disc Awards.
After the success of Wine, she released her first EP in 2017 titled Walkin’. The EP managed to do well in Gaon’s music charts, making it even more popular. Suran has many singles under her name in collaboration with some of the major artists like Hwasa, Crush, Heize, Gary and Zico. All of the songs peaked at high positions on the Korean charts, making her one of the most successful soloists of the decade.
Moreover, many K-Drama Suran fans know for her songs in some of the most popular dramas. If I’m speaking from experience, Heartbeat from Strong Woman Do Bong Soon was Suran’s first song. Furthermore, she has appeared on OST in dramas like A Korean Odyssey, Abyss, Lovestruck in the City, and more recent Tomorrow. Suran is really a genre in its own right on the K-pop scene.
After leaving Million Market, Suran created her own brand called S-TASY and now releases new music under her label.

Soran’s personal life and controversy
Although Suran managed to keep her image clean, she was drawn into unnecessary controversy. This, too, is a misunderstanding created by fans. Everyone knows that Suran has teamed up with Suga on her Wine track. After the song was released, she got involved in a rumor that she was dating him. And she just happened to post a picture with the caption “Yongi” which means brilliance in Korean. Min Yoongi happens to be Suga’s real name. Hence, fans concluded that the two are dating.
Furthermore, she posted a picture of a dog that looks like Suga’s pet. Although Susan finally does speak up, explaining that she is not dating Suga. She felt that she was carrying her own personal experiences, and was not directed towards anyone.
The fact that fans misunderstood her actions made her sad. She announced that she and Suga are only acquaintances and nothing more. However, she adds, people who want to misunderstand will do so, and this frustrates her. Although it was a complete misunderstanding, she had to apologize for something as trivial as the dating rumor. It’s not really easy being a K-pop artist, and Soran realized that.
Furthermore, in 2019, Soran revealed how she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. She had to undergo a mastectomy for that. The whole process, during and after, was a struggle for her. She has opened up about her feeling of losing her femininity during the whole process and she’s worried about how people look at her now.
Fortunately, the cancer hasn’t returned since then, so the treatment must have done its job. Many came to praise Soran’s bravery in sharing this personal incident with everyone.
