When Oda revealed his favorite character in One Piece

In an interview, series creator Eiichiro Oda revealed his favorite One Piece character. While he’s a huge fan of Luffy and most of the Straw Hat Pirates, his most favorite is none of them. Oda revealed in an interview with Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama that his favorite character is Gaimon.

I love Luffy. But the character I like the most is Gaimon.

It’s hard to think of anyone better than him. Just a guy stuck in a treasure chest for 20 years. I think this was a great setup myself.

Gaimon is a former pirate who currently lives as a hermit on the Island of Rare Animals.

In the manga, Gaimon’s debut is a relatively low-key event between Orange Town Arc and Syrup Village Arc, with Luffy and Nami being the only Straw Hat Pirates he meets (with Zoro being too exhausted to go ashore). The anime places Gaimon’s debut between the Syrup Village Arc and the Baratie Arc, integrating both Zoro and Usopp into the meeting and expanding the overall story somewhat.

As a young man, Gaimon is a stereotypical greedy pirate, who cares about little more than plunder. This greed is slowly eroded (though never completely erased) by decades of solitude on the Island of Rare Animals, causing him to value peace and companionship more than any material wealth.

Although he tries to attack the Straw Hat Pirates at first, he ends up befriending them after telling them about his past, and they try to help him get his treasure chests. However, with the boxes empty, Luffy asks him to join his crew, but Gaemon declines the invitation to stay with the animals.
